Drug Discovery and Biotechnology

Introduction

The Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics Program in Drug Discovery and Biotechnology-founded by TIGP, Academia Sinica in 2002-has become one of the best interdisciplinary programs in Taiwan. The program fosters scholarly exchange in order to benefit all parties on their overall research achievements and to increase the number of research professionals in the field with the ultimate goal of promoting the economic and social development of Taiwan. Over these years, the alumni and alumnae from CBMB have served in either academic institutions or the biotech industry to contribute their expertise. 

The program lays a special emphasis on five research fields, including:

1. Protein chemistry
2. Structural biology
3. Medicinal and biological chemistry
4. Molecular and cell biology
5. Key technology

In addition to categorizing our faculty members and courses, our specialties reflect the necessary integration of multiple disciplines involved in today's biotech development. Through the training in course work, bench skills, and thesis research, this program helps students develop two unique strengths; one is to become an independent researcher capable of solving problems and the other is to have the vision and ability to coordinate teamwork.

International Experiences

The CBMB program has been actively pursuing partnerships with other international institutions for student exchange (eligible students will be sent with financial support) and thesis co-supervision, such as Griffith University in Australia and UC Davis in the USA. In addition, the CBMB program also offers students a chance to exchange cultural experiences with American scholars and students from UC Davis during their stay in Taipei in spring every year. It is also a great opportunity for students to gain the most up-to-date knowledge on pharmaceutical chemistry while interacting with professors and students from UC Davis. There are lectures and courses offered by UC Davis' professors. Students who successfully complete those courses may receive a certificate of completion signed by UC Davis' Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Department of Chemistry and are eligible to use those courses to complete program credit requirements.
