Founded in 1928, Academia Sinica is the foremost research institute in Taiwan. More than one thousand researchers from Taiwan and abroad, many of them accomplished scholars in their respective fields, work within Academia Sinica's twenty-eight research institutes.
The mission of Academia Sinica is to undertake in-depth academic research on various subjects in the sciences and humanities, and to provide guidelines, channels of coordination, and incentives geared toward raising academic standards in Taiwan.
In addition to its research institutes, Academia Sinica's Convocation consists of 225 members, all of whom are prominent scholars. This body is an advisory arm of the Academia Sinica. Every two years members from all over the world, including six Nobel laureates, meet in Taipei to consult on major issues concerning education, humanities, science, and technology.
Recognizing the current trend of educational internationalization, Academia Sinica set up the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) in 2002, in order to attract young scholars from around the globe to its campus for advanced, inter-disciplinary studies. In cooperation with the top universities in Taiwan, TIGP will offer eight program options in 2006. All courses will be conducted in English and research grants are available for qualified students. TIGP is a unique and exciting intellectual community that will provide young scholars with tremendous opportunities for academic and personal growth.
